On February 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with medical and health issues, Larry E. Carter Sr, a devoted Jehovah's Witness, unexpectedly passed away with his family at his side at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Larry E. Carter Sr was born on March 27, 1950 in Camden, South Carolina, to the parents of Thomas Carter (deceased) and Jannie Mae Carter.
Larry was married to his high school sweetheart, the wife of his youth of nearly 50 years, Barbara Carter. Weekly, he gave his wife flowers and before texting (SMS), they would leave each other love notes everyday. Before early morning witnessing and after discussing the daily text, Larry would make and have breakfast with his wife. They raised 5 beautiful children: 2 sons- Larry Jr and Ernest and 3 daughters- Felicia, Sharon and Lucretia. Larry especially cherished his mother, Jannie Mae. He often talked about fond memories he shared with his siblings, Kenny and Marvin (deceased) and especially the good times he and his wife shared with his sister, Thomasina and his brother-in-law, Bob.
In 1970 Larry began studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses and learned that God has a name, Jehovah. After learning basic Bible truths, he came to know of Jehovah and His son, Jesus. Larry developed a close friendship with Jehovah and in 1971 he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He attended the former Plymouth and South congregations. Later, Larry served in the Genesee Valley congregation and was currently attended the Arnett congregation. His personal spiritual routine was regular Bible reading, diligent personal study, serious meditation and heartfelt prayers. This motivated him to zealously participate in the Christian ministry and attend meetings regularly for worship. Brother Carter enjoyed serving others and promoting peace and unity in the congregation. That is why he found happiness in serving as a ministerial servant and later as an elder for many years. Attending several Kingdom Ministry Schools helped him to be an effective teacher and shepherd.
Larry was truly a spiritual family man, a loving husband and father. Brother Carter provided a spiritual foundation for his family which consisted of regular family worship and field service activities. Since 2014 the Internet television station called JW Broadcasting and Morning Worship programs were readily available on his tablet for spiritual encouragement and refreshment.
Brother Carter also found satisfaction in various types of volunteer work. He was an active volunteer at the Rochester Assembly Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, performing maintenance duties. In 2006 Larry became a full-time evangelizer (regular pioneer) spending 70 hours each month, preaching and teaching Bible truths along with his pioneer partner and wife, Barbara. He also attended the Pioneer Service School, special training which helped him to draw closer to Jehovah, become more effective in the ministry and to continue on in faithful service. Larry had a passion for the ministry and participated in all facets including public witnessing. He hepled many people to cultivate a strong relationship with Jehovah.
Although Larry lived his adult life in the North, he was always a Southerner at heart. Growing up on a farm, he had a 'green thumb' and planted gardens everywhere and anywhere both spiritually and physically here in Rochester, NY. He enjoyed gardening and sharing fruits and vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. He also was a fisherman and loved to fish both spiritually and physically.
Larry retired from Wegmans in 2005 after working for 34 years. He also worked part-time at Strong Memorial Hospital in the Environmental Services department for 10 years and retired on October 31, 2017. He was a hard worker and he loved to work for his God, Jehovah.
In addition to his lovely and loyal wife, Barbara, he is survived by his Sons-Larry Jr(Tina), Ernest(Brittany), Daughters-Lisa Carter-Lewis(Andrew), Sharon Carter-Larmond(Norman) Lucretia Carter-Fleming(Joseph), Mother- Jannie Mae Carter, Sister and Brother: Thomasina Meade (Bob), Kenneth Carter (Terry); 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, a host of family including aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The Carter family would like to thank everyone who prayed for us, sent beautiful floral arrangements, food and monetary donations and those who voluntered to help us do whatever needed to be done. We appreciate your phone calls, emails and text messages with kind words to comfort us.
The sudden loss of our Dear Brother Larry E. Carter Sr. was made a little easier with the love and support we received from our friends and family. Your sincere expressions of sympathy were greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten.
